Joomla! Menu Item ManagerThis tutorial is a continuation of the Create a New Menu tutorial.

This basic tutorial will guide you through adding items to a menu using the Joomla! administrator interface. The Joomla! resource (Article, Category, Section, etc.) must already exist in order to add it to the menu.

1. First open the 'Menu Item Manager' by either selecting the menu from the 'Menus' toolbar item, or opening the 'Menu Manager' and clicking the 'Menu Items' icon (Joomla! Menu Items Icon).

2. Locate and click the 'New' icon near the top right of the Menu Item Manager screen.

The New Menu Item screen will be displayed, showing a list of Menu Item Types that you can select for the link target of your new Joomla! menu item.

The New Menu Item screen will open, showing a list of Menu Item Types. This tutorial will focus on the 'Article' layout type. Click the 'Articles' selection link to expand the list of sub-types for the Articles link.

There are several sub-types for Article links:

  • Archive: Archived Article List, will add a menu link to a listing of all of the archived articles in the Joomla! web site, the articles will be searchable by date.
  • Article: Article Layout, will add a menu link to a single article and Article Submission Layout, will add a menu link to an article submission form.
  • Category: Category Blog Layout, will add a menu link to an article category which will be displayed in a blog type layout, and Category List Layout, will display a list of articles in a Joomla! web site category.
  • Front Page: Front Page Blog Layout, will add a menu link to the (default) front page of your Joomla! web site.
  • Section: Section Blog Layout, will add a menu link to a list of articles in a Section and will be displayed using a blog type layout, Section Layout, will add a menu link to a list of Categories in a Section.
  • Other Menu Item Types: There are several other menu item types which are not article related.

3. Once you have selected the Menu Item type, the screen will display the New Menu Item configuration screen.

You need to enter the details for the New Menu Item :

  • Title: This text will be displayed in the menu item link.
  • Alias: The alias text will be used to create the page name if Search Engine Friendly (SEF) URL's is enabled in your Joomla! system.
  • Link: For most of the items the this will be a read only field. It contains the URI to the menu item target.
  • Display in: Allows you to select which menu to display the New Menu Item in.
  • Parent Item: Allows you to define the parent of the New Menu Item. Default is Top, but you can use this to create nested menus, by selecting a different parent item from the list (if there are any available).
  • Published: You can select whether or not the New Menu Item will be published when the menu is displayed.
  • Order: Order lets you define where the menu item will be in relation to the other items in the menu.
  • Access Level: This lets you define which Joomla! users will be able to view the menu item; Public will allow anyone to view the menu item, Registered requires the user to be logged in to view the item, and Special sets the access level to a logged in user, with a role of Author or above.
  • On Click, Open in: This item lets you define how the link target will open when the user click on it; Parent Window with Browser Navigation will replace the current page with the content of the link target, New Window with Browser Navigation will open the link target in a new window (or tab), New Window without Browser Navigation will open the link target in a new window which will not contain the browser navigation features such as the back and forward buttons, and the address bar.

There may also be parameters specific to each type of Joomla! Menu Item, if the menu item you selected has configurable parameters, they will be displayed on the right hand side of the New Menu Item details page.

4. Once you have entered the details, and configured the parameters for your new menu item, click the 'Save' icon at the top right of the New Menu Item page. After you have saved the New Menu Item, your newly created item will default to the last position in the Menu Manager. You can change the order of your menu items by using the Order column on the menu manager. Modify the order of the menu items as you wish, then click the diskette icon (Joomla! Save Order Icon) to save your changes.
